Milan

A major tourist destination, Milan is home to an important cultural heritage, including Renaissance palaces, the La Scala opera house and numerous museums. However, to run in Milan is also to run in the industrial, financial and commercial heart of Italy.

Milan is located in a lowland area in the western part of Lombardy, on a stretch of dry land in the middle of a marshy area. Close to the River Po, the city is irrigated by small rivers, partly underground ones, and by several canals. Thanks to its geographical location, close to the French and Swiss Alps, Italy's second largest city is at the crossroads of several communication routes of regional to international importance. This position, together with the fertility of its territory, is the main factor that explains its major historical role, both for the Italian nation and for the transalpine countries. Any race or cultural walk in the city must pass along the banks of the Naviglio Grande, the canal that runs through old Milan. For long-distance runners, the banks of another canal, the Martesana, offer 38 km of trails, perfect for preparing for a marathon! The Sempione Park, sometimes called the "green lung" of Milan, surrounds the Sforzesco Castle. It offers more than 3 kilometres of running in the heart of the city.
